In thinking about history it is helpful to view time as a spiral, rather than a straight static line. The past is connected to the present and the future. Far too often, the myth of the vanished Indian persists in children's history books and curricula. It is imperative to include the narratives of Indigenous Nations in whatever time period you are studying. However, it is equally important to read books that show contemporary Native Americans living in the present. Simply by including these titles in your school or home library you are helping to disrupt the myth of the vanished Indian and you are not perpetuating the relegation of Native Americans to the past.
Turtle Island is the original name for North America.
The name comes from various Indigenous creation stories.
